Greetings from Portugal
In 1969, Simone de Oliveira, a Portuguese singer and actress, represented Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest, which was broadcast in Madrid, Spain.
The song “Desfolhada Portuguesa” was considered one of the best entries of that year. Unfortunately, due to the political ideology in Portugal, the Fascism, established by António de Oliveira Salazar, Europe refused to have the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, making all the countries voting against Portugal. The song only received 1 point from France, 1 from The Netherlands and 2 points from Spain.
In 2005, Portugal was represented in the Eurovision Song Contest by 2B and the song “Amar”.
2B performed at the semi-final in Kyiv (Ukraine) with reasonable hopes for qualifying for the final. Unfortunately, a faulty microphone for the female singer and overall technical mishaps resulted in a disastrous performance. As a result, the song did not qualify, finishing 17th in the semi-final.
Even though one of the EBU rules state that songs can be performed again if the first performance is hindered by technical faults, the song was not repeated.
The disastrous performance on the semi-final and all the problems with the Portuguese delegation during their stay in Kyiv made some journalists think about the possibility of “sabotage” against Portugal, still no proves have been given to be sure about that idea.
